I am so happy to have completed my Master of Music in Composition at CMU! It feels like it went so fast... even though there were so many amazing experiences along the way!
I'm very grateful to my studio professor Dr. Nancy Galbraith, my family and friends, and everyone I've collaborated with, studied with, and joked around with across these past two years. Please stay in touch!
I'm also grateful to have been a part of "The Yeti Operetti," an upcoming operetta I've scored in collaboration with librettist Roger Porres. Piano-vocal selections from the operetta were performed earlier this Spring, and a chamber arrangement of the Act I Overture was read by members of NAT 28. I look forward to the full production in the future!
I am thrilled to have been admitted into University of Georgia's DMA program in composition for Fall 2026!
I also received a teaching assistantship, and feel very grateful for this opportunity to both continue my composition studies and gain experience towards becoming a professor.
Meanwhile, music events have continued at CMU, with one major highlight being the Spring 2026 Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic Student Composers Concert in which 10(!) pieces by graduating composition students were premiered, including my work "Scherzo & Adagio."
It was a great experience to workshop this piece and then have such talented musicians rehearse and perform it in the beautiful Carnegie Music Hall (Oakland). Thank you so much to Dr. Galbraith, Maestro Daniel Nesta Curtis, the members of the CMU Philharmonic, and everyone else involved in making this premiere possible!
Happy New Year!
In November, I worked with my friend and fellow composer Alex Irwin to present a joint MM Composition recital at CMU titled "Alex Irwin & James Krom: Art Songs of Memory, Love, and Hope."
From our recital page:
"'Alex Irwin & James Krom: Art Songs of Memory, Love, and Hope' is a MM Composition joint recital that explores the art song genre in many forms, from piano-vocal collections to purely instrumental art songs. Traditional texts, classic poetry by Robert Frost and Walt Whitman, contemporary poetry by Matthew Galbraith, and even fully original texts all contribute to an exciting and collaborative program that features talented student performers from across CMU’s School of Music!"
This was an incredibly rewarding experience and I'm very grateful to Alex and everyone involved in putting this together!
